Fathers' Day was great fun. Ang and I had stayed up, ordered a little snack (Hot Wings from KFC, which I love [even though I know they are terrible for me--oh well, once in a while, huh]) and watched a movie on Netflix. This meant we didn't get to bed until about midnight.
Normally this wouldn't be too big a deal, but we needed to get up and get on the road pretty early the next morning to head up to Cedar City, UT. Our nephew, Mitch, who recently returned from his LDS mission in South America, was going to be speaking in church about his experiences, and we wanted to be there for that.
Ang had a very early morning, as, being the sweetheart she is, got up and cooked breakfast in bed for me. I honestly don't know how she survived the day. While I had breakfast, each of the kids and Ang brought me cards, pictures, and even cookies they'd made in school. They were all so sweet, and anxious to give me things they thought I'd like--and I loved them all. I am so proud as I see their artwork progressing.
While all of the gifting was going on, I set my breakfast aside--big mistake. I turned my back, and when I turned back around, Jesse was making short work of my bacon and eggs. Sweet Ang brought me some more though, so I didn't go hungry (and neither did Jesse).
The road trip was great. The kids traveled so well that is was just relaxing. I could have driven all day like that. We had a primary song CD which we played most of the way, listening to Jesse and Soleil sing to it most of the way. On our way out of Vegas, the kids all spotted several freight trains, and immediately burst into a rousing rendition of "Gone," by Montgomery Gentry, which to them, is "the freight train song." Further up the road, after 36 "are we there yets" we got to the gorge. That's where things got exciting. Just as we entered it, five guys on bullet bikes raced by us. I could see them coming up on us, and told the kids so they could watch them go by. I was going a little over the 75 mph speed limit, and they blew by us like we were standing still. We tried to keep them in sight as we continued up the gorge, but they were gone soon. Then, half way up, we spotted them off the side of the road talking. Must have been taking bets on who would win the second leg, because just after we passed them, they blew by us again. At the top of the gorge, they got off, crossed an overpass, and raced back down the other way. I have to admit, it looked like a blast.
Mitch did a really nice job in Church, and it was great to hear about his mission. We then went for a quick lunch at Wes and Cathleen's--Mitch cooked bar-b-que, grilled chicken, and steak--good stuff.
We were getting ready to go, and I thought, "Tropic is only an hour-and-a-half away, we should just run over and surprise Stan for Fathers' Day." Ang agreed, so we headed over there and visited with he and Mom for a little while. We also got to see Barb, Mclain, and their families while there.
Finally, the ride home began, and we again had a nice trip, with the obligatory stop at McDonalds for Happy Meals. I love my family. We had so much fun, and were so wiped by the time we got home that we slept VERY well.
As an aside, you have to check out this video called Dad's Life that Ang's brother told us about. It is hilarious.
