At Walker Elementary School, where Spanish is taught half the day in somewhat of an immersion setting, a child from each grade is selected as El Premio. This means that six students out of about 850 are selected each month.
An El Premio student is one who does not speak Spanish natively (i.e., someone who speaks it as a primary language at home), but who demostrates strong skills in the language. This includes not only the ability to speak it, but also annunciation and accent, among other things. We learned today that Soleil was chosen as this month's Kindegarten student. Her teacher has shared with Angie that Soleil's accent is one of the best she's seen in a student so young. She loves to work on her Spanish, and we are very proud of her.
As an El Premio student, she'll get to meet and have lunch with Dr. Walker, after whom her school is named, and to "speak the most Spanish that I can to him" according to Soleil. Can't wait for that!
