As noted in some of the earlier posts, we've spent quite a bit of time out of town during the past two weekends. That being the case, we've gotten a little out of touch with what is going on at Church. Well, this morning we found out how clueless we were. Our church starts at 1pm, so at about noon, we started to get ready. We called the kids in, who'd been out playing with friends, and told them to get changed. One of their little friends said something like, "but today is the day only grownups go to Church." That didn't really make sense, but we started to ask ourselves what might be different about today from any other Sunday. Ang quickly guessed the answer: Stake Conference! We weren't sure, but I checked the stake calendar and was able to determine that, in fact, it was Stake Conference today.
For those of you who are not LDS, the normal Sunday meetings take place in what are ward meetings. A ward is a typical congregation, usually consisting of 350-550 people who live in a certain geographic area. A stake is a larger area, made up of anywhere from 8-12 wards. Twice each year, we have what is called Stake Conference, when our stake leaders speak and set up the program for that Sunday. It is typically a two hour meeting at the Stake Center, which is an LDS church that is larger than the standard sized building.
The next thing you have to understand is that Stake Conference is usually relatively early in the morning: typically about 10am. Now, if you do the math, and have been paying attention, you'll find that we came to the realization that Stake Conference was today just as it was ending!
Ang and I just looked at each other like we were the dumbest people alive. Rhett reacted somewhat differently. He was standing there as I was searching for, and finally getting, confirmation that stake conference was today and we'd missed it. As soon as it was confirmed, his reaction was literally the exact same as when the Jazz beat Orlando in overtime last week at the game we got to attend. He jumped in the air, pumped his fist, and ran downstairs with more animation than I've seen him have in a long time. Well, what are you going to do. We just laughed. Hopefully, though, we'll pay a little bit better attention to our schedules in the future.
