Fun In Southern Utah--A Wedding, Shopping and a Rock Climb
Yesterday day was a lot of fun. We'd been planning on going up to southern Utah for several weeks as our nephew, Mitch, Wes and Kathleen's son, had set his wedding day for yesterday. It also worked out well to go on an adventure with the cousins and uncles as well as to give Angie her Mothers' Day present.
The story begins a few weeks ago. I had recently lost my cousin (irononically also named Mitch) to a long bout with diabetes, and attended his funeral in Cedar City (even more ironically, in the same chapel as nephew Mitch and his fiance, Kassie, got married). Angie's favorite store in the world is Tai Pan Trading Company in St. George, UT (home decor, etc...). I always have a hard time finding gifts for her, but got the idea as I drove through St. George on the way to the funeral that a gift card to Tai Pan would be well received. I picked one up on the way back home, and then made sure we left extra early for the wedding yesterday for so we could stop for an hour or so in St. George and let Ang shop (yes, I did have to give her her present a day early, but it was worth it to see her so excited) while I took the kids to lunch.
After Ang was done shopping, we hurried on up to Cedar City, getting there about 30 minutes before the wedding. It was really nice. The bride and groom made a sharp couple, and seemed very happy. The bride's name is Kassie Liston, and Liston not being an extremely common name, I wondered if she was related to a Liston I'd known when growing up in high school. After talking to hef father in the line, I found out he was the person I'd known. He played basketball for a rival high school (Escalante), but I'd always thought a lot of him.
After the wedding, we were talking to Ang's brothers in the church and Mike, who is never without his rock climbing equipment, suggested we go up Cedar Canyon for a few hours and climb while waiting for the reception to begin. Turned out to be a great idea. We went up the canyon (Mike & Ryan and their families and us). Mike, of course, was the first one up, hooking the rope up at the top. Then most of us took a turn going up the face. It was about a 50-60ft climb, nothing big for an experienced climber, but it was a bit of a challenge for us greenhorns. Ang and I made it to the top, Rhett and Soleil gave it a good try, and Jesse wanted nothing to do with it (he may be the smartest one in the family). Then we went over across the street and watched the rushing water in Coal Creek, which Jesse loved (though he was concerned about crocadiles coming out of it and chasing him).
As we were getting ready to leave the church, the bride and groom came out. We talked to them for a second and Mitch asked if we were going back to Vegas that night. I said we were, and he said, "Well, we might pass you, because we are headed there too." I mentioned this to the kids, and Jesse's eyes got big and he excitedly asked, "Are they coming to our house for a sleepover?!" Hmmm. Well, I explained that, while they were coming to Vegas, I believed they had another place they were staying, so they would not be staying at our house with us on their wedding night (ha,ha).
On the way home, we decieded to grab a bite to eat in St. George. Knowing this was the plan, the kids began asking how soon we'd get there. Jesse apparently hadn't gotten the "St." portion of St. George, and asked at one point, "Dad, when are we going to be at 'Curious George' (i.e., St. George)." Ang and I glanced at each other and stifled a laugh. When we got home, we got all the sleeping kids to their beds and just let them sleep in their clothes as they were wiped. We were the same, so it was to bed a short time later.
